Citations to records and papers held by the Mount Holyoke College Archives and Special Collections should indicate clearly the source of materials used. Proper citation helps both the researcher who may wish to see records a second time and Archives' and Special Collections' staff who may be asked to locate cited documents. Listed below are examples of suggested citation formats for unpublished materials to be recorded in footnotes and bibliographies. Archival Collections:

Format: Record Group/Subgroup Name, Description, Repository Name, Institutional Affiliation, Location.

Example 1: Security Office, Detectives' Report September 4 to October 14, 1924 , Archives and Special Collections, Mount Holyoke College, South Hadley, MA

Example 2: Alumnae Biographical File, Brown Rachel F., Class of 1920, Appointment Bureau form, January 31, 1922 , Archives and Special Collections, Mount Holyoke College, South Hadley, MA

Manuscript Collections:

Format: Collection Title, Description, Repository Name, Institutional Affiliation, Location.

Example 1: Virginia Apgar Papers, K.S Holt to Virginia Apgar, August 10, 1962, Archives and Special Collections, Mount Holyoke College, South Hadley, MA

Example 2: Washington Irving Letter, Washington Irving to Julia Sanders, April 3, 1854. Archives and Special Collections, Mount Holyoke College, South Hadley, MA

Note: Individual references to specific documents rarely appear in bibliographies. If mentioned, such references should be the last item of entry.

Archival Collections:

Format: Location. Institutional Affiliation. Record Group Name.

Manuscript Collections:

Format: Location. Institutional Affiliation. Collection Name.
