Awards & Recognition

Each spring the Athletic Awards Committee will plan a recognition ceremony to recognize senior student-athletes specifically, as well as some under-classwomen athletes who are deemed especially deserving.

21. Athletic Director's Award

1. Senior Awards
Given to all student-athletes who have participated on a team three years or more. If a student is on more than one team she will receive a rose in recognition for her second sport.

2. Alumnae Association Scholar-Athlete Award
This is the department’s top scholar-athlete award. This award is given to a senior who is outstanding as an athlete and a scholar. The student’s cumulative GPA must be a 3.5 or higher.

3. Alice Crothers Bland Memorial Basketball Award
Award given to the most valuable player in basketball.

4. The O'Malley Cup (Crew)
Given to a member of the crew team who exemplifies team spirit, sportsmanship, support of teammates, and willingness to take responsibility for organizing team activities and tasks.

5. Holly Metcalf Award (Crew)
Given for "outstanding dedication to the pursuit of excellence in rowing."

6. Betsy Brown Cross-Country Recognition Award
Award is given to a member of the cross-country team who has made the most significant contribution to the team. She may be one of the top runners, and/or may embody the spirit of distance running demonstrated by her efforts throughout the season.

7. Mildred S. Howard Field Hockey Recognition Award
Award is given to the player who exemplifies outstanding skill, leadership, and work ethic in both practices and games. The player is a role model because of her dedication to the team and sport.

8. Ruth C. Andrew Golf Award
This award is given on the recommendation of the golf coach.

9. Indoor Track & Field Achievement Award
Award is given to the most valuable player (MVP) based on performance in one or more events, point accumulation, and/or on her effort(s) and training regime throughout the season.

10. Ruth C. Timm Lacrosse Recognition Award
Award is given to the most outstanding contributor and is voted on by the players.

11. Outdoor Track & Field Achievement Award
Award is given to the most valuable player (MVP) based on performance in one or more events, point accumulation, and/or on her effort(s) and training regime throughout the season.

12. Winter Hill Challenge Trophy (Riding)
Award, which is donated by Elizabeth Hamm, is given to the “most contributing” member of the team (attitude, dependability, etc.).

13. Fiske-Harrington Soccer Cup
Reggie Ludwig established a soccer award in 1984 to honor two members of the class of 1926 who were members of one of the first soccer squads at MHC. The athletics director and coach decide on the award.

14. The Players Cup (Squash)
Award was established in 1989-90 during the first varsity season, and is given to a member of the squash team who made the most significant overall contribution to the team, both as a player and as a team member. This person should have demonstrated strong squash skills, determination, and persistence on the court, willingness to help and work with all team members, and should have developed and maintained good physical fitness throughout the season.

15. Rookie of the Year Award (Squash)
Award given to a first year squad member who has made an outstanding contribution to the team both on and off the court.

16. Ann C. Cummings Award (Swimming & Diving)
Started in 1986. Anne C. Cummings was killed in an accident the August prior to her senior year. Her class established this award in her honor and it is given to the person who has given the most to her sport.

17. Noll Newcomer of the Year Award (Swimming & Diving)
This award was established in 1998 by the family of Lindsey Noll, class of 1998. It is given to a student-athlete who is participating for the first time on the swim team, and has established herself as a significant contributor to the team as demonstrated by her dedication, enthusiasm, hard work, performance, and commitment to the team.

18. Sally Barnes Bondurant Tennis Award
Presented to a member of the MHC varsity tennis team who, through her "sportsmanship, spirit, and ability" has best served the finest traditions of MHC tennis as exemplified by Sally Barnes Bondurant, class of 1953.

19. Player's Award (Tennis)
Voted on by the coach and players for recognition of her outstanding overall contribution to the team: leadership, dependability, support and assistance for teammates, sportswoman and good athlete.

20. Peter Meltzer Award (Volleyball)
Most valuable player in volleyball based on athletic ability, attitude, and overall contributions to the team.

21. Athletic Director's Award
Given to a student-athlete at the discretion of the Director of Athletics. May not necessarily be awarded annually.
