Mary Lyon's Grave Project

The Botanic Garden and Facilities Management is starting an exciting project to improve and monitor the health of the trees in the area around Mary Lyon's Grave, sometimes called the Sugar Maple Grove. The area is bounded by Clapp Lab on the north, Gateway Road on the east and south, and the Chapel on the west. This area contains unhealthy trees, and several hazardous trees. Some of the project goals are to remove the hazardous trees, improve the soil quality, and aerate the soil in order to decrease stress on tree roots and the trees themselves.

Once the hazardous trees are removed, actions will be taken to mitigate the heavily compacted, poor soil, including root aeration via radial trenching, and the addition of compost and mulch to some of the areas beneath the trees. The compost and mulch will improve the soil quality, provide much needed nutrients for the trees, and help conserve moisture in the soil, all of which will decrease the stress on the trees, and promote healthy tree growth.

We hope to launch a full site soon with many more details on this exciting project, with a complete listing of who is involved, more details on what steps we are taking, and updates on how the trees fare with their improved soil conditions, after the work is completed.
