Time for Reflection
The Annual Spring Flower Show at Mount Holyoke College
Botanic Garden will begin Saturday, March 5th and run through Sunday,
March 20th, 2005 in the Talcott Greenhous e. This horticultural
event will showcase hundreds of spring-blossoming bulbs and plants,
which will be displayed in the main Show House. This year’s
theme is ‘Time for Reflection’, and will feature a reflecting
pool of bluestone, as well as other elements of a formal garden,
interspersed with spring-flowering plants and bulbs. Flower Show
attendees may expect to see fragrant favorites such as hyacinths,
narcissus, pansies, freesia, primroses, canary broom, as well as
tulips, anemones, ranunculus, crocus, scilla, muscari, cineraria
and calceolaria or pocketbook plant.
2005 Spring Lecture Series
All lectures are free and open to the public.
Free lectures on gardening and horticulture, presented in conjunction
with our Spring Flower Show. Following every lecture, there will
be a reception for the speaker in the illuminated Talcott Greenhouse.

First-Hand Reports from the Garden

and world-weary writers who know it's not all about the garden of
Eden. Paula Panich, M.F.A., is author of the forthcoming Cultivating
Words: The Guide to Writing About the Plants and Gardens You Love
(Tryphon Press). Publisher of www.dirtagardenjournal.com, she teaches
garden writing at the New York Botanical Garden and other venues.
3/23/05 - Ron Kujawski: A Yankee's View of the English
Garden: Lessons I Learned

Ron Kujawski, noted former UMass Extension agent of 25 years,
specializing in landscape, nursery and urban forestry, will speak
on English gardens. The magical, lush, and intricate gardens of
Sissinghurst, Hidcote, and Dixter inspire visions of heaven, yet
they also can be horticulturally intimidating. Discover the gardening
lessons this New Englander brought home in this colorful slide presentation.
Ron Kujawski is a horticultural consultant, writer, and lecturer.
4/05/05 - Bobby J. Ward: The Plant Hunter’s Garden
7:00 PM, Morrison Room, Willits-Hallowell Center
(across the river from the Talcott Greenhouse)
Bobby Ward, author of The Plant Hunter’s Garden; The New
Explorers and Their Discoveries, will speak on his acclaimed book.
In his book, Ward explores the lives and discoveries of 32 of today’s
more prolific plant hunters, individuals who are collecting plants
specifically for horticultural introduction. Ward, a retired environmental
scientist with a PhD in botany, is a past president of the North
American Rock Garden Society, and an avid gardener.
