Horticultural
Assistant (2)
The position provides experience in all aspects of maintaining a
diverse collection of plants in a variety of garden settings, as
well as documentation of the collections, and an active part in
our seed exchange program. Garden areas include several mixed perennial
beds and borders, woodland plantings, a rock garden, and a rhododendron
garden. The volunteer will be enthusiastic about plants and gardening
and will be willing to learn about the identification and care of
a wide range of herbaceous and woody plants. Further, the volunteer
will be excited about the daily operation of a public botanic garden.
The candidate will also be motivated, hardworking, conscientious,
committed and attentive to detail. Physical requirements include
being able to work in a variety of weather conditions, lifting up
to 50 pounds, and being in generally good physical condition.
Greenhouse
Assistant (1)
The position involves all aspects of greenhouse and conservatory
operation. The duties of the volunteer would include watering, transplanting,
fertilizing, deadheading, media operation, and general upkeep of
the greenhouse and its diverse plant collection. The greenhouse
comprises of the head house, warm and cold production houses, cycad
house, orchid house, tropical conservatory, show house and succulent
house. The volunteer position includes some involvement in the documentation
of the collections. This position involves occasional heavy lifting
and requires the volunteer to be in a generally good physical condition.
Seasonal
Help
The number of positions available is variable for this position.
The position involves participation of the volunteer(s) for a few
weeks at one particular time or various times of the year when the
Botanic Garden requires the most help. The candidate will be present
the time of year he/she is available and willing to assist the greenhouse.
The volunteer will be notified at least a week in advance and will
be expected to be present at the time mentioned in the notification.
Volunteers will pot spring bulbs in early fall (Sept-Oct), assist
in the set-up and organization of the annual spring flower show
(March-May).
