"This internship was a great way to network! I had two internship/job offers for the fall and beyond...and I met so many incredible people who are all willing to help me as I approach my own December job search."-- American Studies Major '01

Internships

An internship is an exciting way for you to explore career fields, apply your learning, and get hands-on experience. In your time at MHC, you will have seven opportunities, including summers and January terms, for internships—or more, if you decide to do a semester internship. This Internship link is focused specifically on internships.

How Internships Can Help You

  • Clarify and determine your major and minor
  • Use your classroom experiences in a practical manner
  • Try out a field you are considering
  • Gain relevant work experience
  • Develop professional skills
  • Make valuable contacts in the work world

This section highlights information specifically about internships of all kinds: summer, January, and academic year. New College legislation beginning Summer 2006 allows you to register for Practicum credit (295P or 395P) to receive credit for independent work with an internship, as long as there is a substantial academic component supervised by a Mount Holyoke faculty member who assigns the grade.  The practicum can take place either in January or during the summer, and the bulk of credit-bearing work will normally take place during the following semester.  Practicum designation ordinarily requires consultation with a faculty member prior to the beginning of the practicum and, of course, during the semester of 295P or 395P enrollment.  Independent work with a practicum component is governed by the same policies as all other independent work. Summer 2006 was the last opportunity for students to request transcription notation. Beginning January 2007, students seeking academic credit for an internship are encouraged to register for a 295P or 395P.

The CDC provides many resources to help you find an internship that will be a good match for your goals and interests. Summer Opportunities link will guide you to comprehensive listings arranged by academic department, which will provide you with ideas for finding great things to do in the summer!  In addition, the following broader resources will assist you in researching internship opportunities specific to your needs.
