Essential Publications These essential publications in the Career Library will help you find and apply for awards.
Director for Graduate and Professional School Advising The Director for Graduate and Professional School Advising works with students interested in applying for both nomination/endorsement and direct-apply awards and can advise students on general search techniques, determining whether or not an award is an appropriate fit, developing goals, completing applications, reading and assisting with personal statements and proposal drafts, interview skills, and mock interviews. The Director for Graduate and Professional School Advising also manages the application and nomination process of all awards requiring nomination or endorsement.
Students are encouraged to make appointments to meet with the Director for Graduate and Professional School Advising to discuss their interest in applying for prestigious national and international awards. Students must meet with the Director for Graduate and Professional School Advising if they intend to apply for nomination/endorsement awards. Appointments are scheduled by the CDC receptionist at extension 2080.
Career Counselors CDC career counselors are available by appointment and during library drop-in appointments (regularly held throughout the academic year) to help you refine your ability to articulate your experience, skills and goals, and assist with resumes and interview skills among other things. Appointments are scheduled by the CDC receptionist at extension 2080.
Career Library Information on awards received by the fellowship office is filed in the CDC Library for student use. These files contain a combination of information sent directly by the organization, information on how to contact the organization giving the award, and how to obtain applications.
Our library has the largest collection of resources on scholarships and fellowships in the Five College area. There are directories of awards for students by field of study, ethnicity, gender, research, travel, professional internships and more; website resource booklets for financial aid; books on writing personal statements; and tips on the general search process.
It may seem outdated, but often you must type your applications or sections of them on a typewriter. There are several for your use in the CDC Library.
Deadline Calendars Check out the many direct apply awards that do not require endorsement by Mount Holyoke College.
See the deadlines for nomination/endorsement awards for award-specific details.
Workshops Workshops on applying for national and international prestigious awards, locating fellowships and scholarships, and writing personal statements are held each fall. See the CDC Master Calendar of Events for dates and times.
Drop-in Appointments During the fall, drop-in appointments (fifteen minutes) are available with the Director for Graduate and Professional School Advising. Drop-in appointments must be scheduled the day of the appointment either by phone (X2080) or in person at the CDC.

Academic Departments Academic departments are often good places to make connections to universities or programs abroad, develop ideas for study with the help of knowledgeable faculty, and review the feasibility of projects. Several departments offer research opportunities during the summer and/or academic year that provide valuable preparation for future independent study or research. Additionally, some departments give their own awards.
Advisors and Other Faculty Advisors can be wonderful resources for students entering into award application processes. Not only can advisors counsel students on particular programs of interest for study or travel, they can help develop project proposals, personal statements, and more. Faculty may have suggestions for contacts in their field.
Additionally, and maybe more importantly, advisors and other faculty members with whom you have a strong relationship can write recommendations that tell award selection committees who you are and why you deserve to win. The Director for Graduate and Professional School Advising can provide tips for how to ask faculty for successful letters of recommendation.

Local Organizations and Employers Students should contact community organizations, including local chapters of Rotary, Lions, and other clubs. These organizations sometimes offer scholarships to local students that are not widely advertised. Students should investigate opportunities through organizations in their place of residence, as well as in the College area. In addition, employers, churches, and labor unions may offer scholarships for their members’ and employees’ children.
