Frequently Asked Questions
The Student Employment Office coordinates the student employment program on campus, administers the Community Service Federal Work Study Program and maintains the On- and Off-Campus Spot Jobs listings. Read the Student Guide to acquaint yourself with student employment policies and procedures.
Who is eligible to work on campus? Students receiving financial aid work study awards are given priority in hiring. Students who do not receive work study may apply for campus employment two weeks after the semester begins. Who is eligible to work off campus? Only students packaged with Federal Work Study are eligible to work at any of our off-campus community service or America Reads/Counts sites.
Where can I find a listing of on- and off-campus jobs? JobX is our student employment database. You can find all on- and off-campus jobs listed there. Go to JobX or to Student Employment on the Career Development Center Web site. You can do a “quick search” or an “advanced search," depending on what you’re looking for. You can also subscribe to “Job-Mail” in JobX. If you do subscribe, this feature will email you when jobs are available in departments of interest to you.
How Do I Apply to Jobs Listed on JobX? You can apply online in JobX for each position that is listed. Answer all questions on the application and follow the directions in forwarding it to the department supervisor. Each supervisor is responsible for responding to every student that applies, regardless of whether they're hired or not.
Who must work in Dining Services? All first-year students are required to work in Dining Services. Each student must work at least 2-3 hours (or one shift) in Dining Services before they can secure additional employment in another department. Approval must be obtained from the Dining Services Manager first.
How many hours per week can I work? Students must not work more than 8-10 hours per week. Student earnings are monitored biweekly and students will be notified if it appears they are working over their maximum earnings.
What will my hourly wage be if I work on campus? The Student Employment Task Force, made up of student representatives and student supervisors from a variety of campus offices, has created a wage structure that will provide clear guidance on what to pay our student workers in a fair, equitable and consistent manner. All wages apply regardless of the origin of student salary, including outside grants. See the Student Policy Guide to MHC Employment found on the Career Development Center’s Web site.
Must I work even if I have work study? If you decide to decline your campus work award, notify the Office of Student Financial Services in writing as soon as possible.
Do January Term Earnings Apply to Maximum Earnings Limit? No. January Term earnings are not applied to the MEL with the exception of Community Service and America Reads/Counts positions, as these are federally funded programs.
Does My Hall President/Student Assistant Stipend Count Toward my Maximum Earnings Limit Yes, your stipend does count as earnings and will be monitored. Your contract with Residential Life stipulates that you shouldn't be working elsewhere, so you should verify with Residential Life if there is any conflict with your working in another department.
