On-Campus Recruiting
Information Sessions Each year, a large number of employers come to Mount Holyoke and other local colleges to hold information sessions and conduct interviews. Information sessions begin in the fall and continue throughout the year, so be sure to check the LyonNetfor upcoming employer visits. Many employers will hold information sessions (either on site or by teleconferencing) prior to their actual recruiting date. You can learn about the company or organization, entry-level positions and potential career paths, and qualifications important for success. Information sessions provide a forum to listen and to ask questions about the organization and/or industry in a neutral environment. These sessions can benefit you in the short run, providing for a more successful interview, and in the long run giving you a clearer understanding of the industry and the opportunities it can offer.
On-Campus Interviews Each organization will have a specific process for applications. Most include an electronic application, and may include other materials as well. Opportunities will be posted and featured through LyonNet, be sure to review it regularly so you remain informed throughout your job search. The majority of the organizations recruiting on-campus ask that you submit an online company application and other materials electronically. It is your responsibility to read the application guidelines in the job description and to submit the appropriate materials; late or incomplete applications will not be considered by recruiting organizations. If selected, you will be notified through LyonNet, and you will be able to schedule an appointment.
Preparation To interview well, practice your verbal advertisement (elevator speech), prepare for interview questions, and conduct research so that you can participate in a good discussion with company representatives. Many of these company interviewers are alumnae who want to see you succeed, but you must be able to distinguish yourself by talking about your accomplishments clearly and with focus.
Grooming and dress are also important; you are presenting yourself as a business woman now. In most cases a conservative suit, knee length skirt or slacks in dark color are the best choices. Simple jewelry, closed toe shoes, modest makeup and light perfume are other items to consider. Hairdos which are neat and allow the interviewer to focus on your face help too.
Ethics of interviewing & Responding to Job Offers Adherence to these principles of professionalism will facilitate a mutually satisfying relationship among students, recruiters, and the college.
- Interviews are considered a personal contract between the student and the employer. If you are unable to keep a scheduled appointment you owe the recruiter and the College the courtesy of canceling with a minimum of 48 hours notice. A letter of apology to the recruiting organization will be required.
- Second interviews are usually held at the organizations home office and in some cases travel expenses are paid by the organization. Typically, reimbursed expenses are limited to travel, automobile rental (if required), room accommodations and meals.
- After accepting an offer, students should inform the CDC, withdraw from the interviewing process and notify other organizations with which they have offers pending. From an ethical perspective, accepting an offer means you will not continue to interview with other organizations.
- The CDC expects similar professional conduct from recruiting organizations. Any inappropriate behavior on the part of the interviewers, on or off-campus, should be reported to the CDC.
Students who do not follow these guidelines may be barred from participation in CDC recruiting programs.
Interview(s) Cancellation Policy Good business practices and courtesy to employers and other students prescribe that EVERY APPOINTMENT be kept. In the event of an emergency (illness or personal crisis) within 48 hours of your interview, immediately notify the CDC. Please contact the CDC at 538-2080 and leave a detailed message on our voice mail. Any cancellation may require that you write a letter of apology to the recruiter explaining the situation.
Employer Information Students will find information on each organization recruiting on LyonNet. Be sure to check company websites, Career Search, Google and other relevant professional associations for detailed information.
